Your Atlanta Weight Loss Surgery Options
We perform a variety of different weight loss surgeries at our office. The one that’s best for you will depend on many factors. Your doctor will discuss the best choice for you and help develop a weight loss plan that will suit your lifestyle needs. Here is an overview of the various Atlanta weight loss surgery options that are available.
Biliopancreatic Diversion – Duodenal Switch
This surgery involves removing about 70% of the stomach with a sleeve gastrectomy. Then, the end of the intestine is connected to the duodenum near the stomach. This will allow food to bypass the intestine during digestion.
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
This is a common type of surgery performed in the country. It starts by reducing the size of the stomach using surgical staples. Then, a section of the small intestine is attached to the stomach so that consumed food will bypass the lower stomach and about 5 feet of small intestine. This results in fewer calories and nutrients being absorbed by the body.
Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication
This procedure is similar to a sleeve gastrectomy, described below, but instead of removing part of the stomach, the surgeon will fold and sew it closed. This will successfully reduce the size of the stomach so the patient consumes fewer calories before feeling full.
Laparoscopic Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy
This is the same procedure as the biliopancreatic diversion. It reduces the capacity of the stomach so you feel full much faster but does not rearrange the small intestine like in the duodenal switch procedure.
Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAP-BAND)
LAP-BAND surgery is commonly known, and over 190,000 patients have used it since it was approved in 2001. Instead of removing any portion of the stomach, a constrictive band is placed around the upper portion of the stomach. This limits how much the stomach can expand, therefore reducing the amount you can comfortably eat.
Revisional Bariatric Surgery
For those who have had a bariatric surgery in the past, but are not happy with the results, we can offer a revisional surgery to correct the issue and get your weight loss journey back on track.
Orbera Gastric Balloon
During this procedure, a small balloon is placed inside your stomach. Since it takes up a large portion of the space, it helps you to manage your portion sizes and consume less food. After six months, the balloon is removed and you are encouraged to maintain your new, healthy lifestyle.
